Mark’s mouth opened.
Then closed.
The YF-23 was the kind of aircraft aviation enthusiasts argued about decades later.
An experimental fighter that never became the aircraft most people expected.
A machine built around speed, stealth, and unconventional aerodynamics.
And Pauline had flown it.
But that wasn’t even the most remarkable part.
“What else did you fly?”
Pauline’s eyes remained fixed on the instruments.
“T-38.”
“That’s a trainer.”
“Yes.”
“F-104?”
“Yes.”
“F-16?”
“Yes.”
“F-15?”
“Yes.”
Mark looked at her.
“Anything else?”
Pauline smiled.
“Some things you’re not cleared to ask about.”That was when Mark finally understood.
The grandmother he had threatened to have arrested wasn’t confused.
She wasn’t guessing.
She wasn’t imagining the engine failure.
She had recognized it by sound.
The aircraft jolted again.
Pauline immediately adjusted the controls.
“Mark.”
“Yes?”
“Give me the engine readings.”
He read them aloud.
Pauline listened.
“Reduce thrust on the left.”
Mark hesitated.
“But—”
