“I’m leaving around 8:00 tomorrow night,” Carmen said, standing in our bedroom while checking her makeup in the mirror.
I looked up from the wedding budget spread across my laptop. “Leaving for what?”
“The party at Blackwater Lodge. Natalia invited me weeks ago. I told you about it.”
I remembered. Natalia was an old friend of hers who had recently started spending time with a group of people I barely knew. The party was being held at a rented lakeside lodge outside the city. She shrugged. “Whenever people decide to leave.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Carmen turned toward me. “Jesse, it’s one party. Why are you making it a problem?”
“Because we’re getting married in 6 weeks, and you barely know half the people who’ll be there. It’s a remote lodge. There’s going to be alcohol everywhere, and nobody seems to know who’s organizing the whole thing.”
“Natalia knows them.”
“Knowing someone doesn’t mean knowing everyone who’s going to be there.”
